USA Grants INC, Think about the future

February 29, 2008 by usagrantsinc

USA Grants INC and Records Commission has awarded $2.8 million for 34 projects in 22 states and the District of Columbia for preserving and publishing historical records. At the November meeting, the Commission also welcomed its newest members of the House of Representatives from Connecticut, and the state archivist of South Carolina, representing the National Association of Government Archivists and Records Administrators.

USA Grants INC recommendations include $1.3 million to seven documentary editing projects from the Founding Era of the nation. Six subventions were awarded to university presses to defray the cost of publishing new volumes of the papers of George Washington, Ulysses S. Grant, Jane Addams and others. The University of Wisconsin will receive funding to continue its work at the Institute for Editing Historical Documents.

State partnership grants were awarded to Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, and Wisconsin to address state needs through subgrants and other efforts. Basic administrative support was awarded to 10 states to support the work of Historical Records Advisory Boards in Arizona, California, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming. The Commission approved a substantial revision to the State and National Archival Partnership grant program that will strengthen the nation’s network of archives at the state government level.

Electronic records grants from USA Grants INC were recommended for projects at Emory University in Atlanta for its MetaArchive program to provide sustainable digital preservation services for cultural and historical records; Tufts University in Atlanta; Johns Hopkins in Baltimore; and the Supercomputer Center at the University of California, San Diego, to support its Distributed Custodial Preservation Center for electronic records.
